President Obama’s swift moves to close down American involvment in Iraq comes as leaders from Afghanistan worry about his changing positions in Afghanistan. Obama’s changed war strategy could hurt Kabul’s government, according to a story by the LA Times:

Reporting from Washington—Afghanistan’s defense minister warned Thursday that the Obama administration’s proposed changes in U.S. war strategy risk undermining Kabul’s civilian government because they appear to scale back U.S. goals in the country.

Abdul Rahim Wardak said he was troubled by recent comments from senior U.S. officials that they were “lowering expectations” in Afghanistan in order to set more “obtainable goals,” saying such language recalls memories of the U.S. desertion of Afghanistan after the Soviet Union pulled out in 1989.

“Changing course, adopting a new strategy of containment or dropping the idea of a strong central government will be falling into the trap the enemy has laid, helping them to achieve their evil objectives,” Wardak said in a speech at a Washington think tank before meetings with U.S. diplomatic and military officials.

Obama must slow down and ensure his changing policies don’t endanger American troops or civilians. Change just for the sake of change can be dangerous. For example, it appears that commanders are now worried that the president’s plans to withdraw from Iraq may be too hasty. Obama’s left-wing base and anti-troop contingents have tremendous sway over him. But Obama has to put the safety of our nation ahead of politics.

President Obama’s selections for foreign policy and national security positions have been an abysmal failure thus far. From a war on terror / national security standpoint, President Obama just could not pick the right personnel.

Eric Holder, his choice for Attorney General, comes from a law firm that actually REPRESENTS Gitmo detainees and has fought hard to get them released. Now we see him visiting Gitmo, seeing the same facts that we saw, and concluding that the camp still has to be closed even at the expense of increasing our security risk here at home!

Leon Panetta, another extremely poor choice Obama made, was appointed to CIA director and wasted no time in pissing off Argentina, the 2nd largest economy in the South American continent, by lumping the country together with Venezuela in terms of economic crisis.

Now, Hillary Clinton is doing her part by pissing off our allies - namely one of our strongest, the state of Israel. It wouldn’t be the same Obama administration without Hillary around to bungle things up as well!

In classic Liberal flip flopping, Sen Clinton has changed position on Israel with whatever political wind was going to help her. As first lady she was all buddy buddy with the Palestinians and Arafat, then running for Senator of New York she became a hawkish supporter of Israel and voted to start the war in Iraq. Now as Obama’s chief diplomat, she has changed position again, criticizing Israel harshly.

According to this report by CBS, Hilarry sent “angry messages demanding Israel speed up aid to Gaza.” Another blog reports that she “....been chiding Israel for not getting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip fast enough.” Maybe its hard to pass out food when there are Hamas rockets flying overhead.

“Jewish leaders are furious,” says the CBS report.

President Obama is moving swiftly to withdraw troops from Iraq, just as he warned he would do during his campaign. He has apparently made a compromise with the experts - the commanders - to mollify his socialist buddies in Congress.

According to the VOA news.com:

Like many government decisions, this one involved some compromise. Mr. Obama wanted to withdraw troops during a 16 month period. Military chiefs asked for 23 months. They apparently have settled on 19 months, with as many as 50,000 troops staying behind - most as trainers and advisers. That angered some lawmakers in the president’s Democratic Party, who want all U.S. forces to leave Iraq. 

Well, isn’t that special??? Seems he has compromised. The sad thing is that his compromise may endanger Americans.

Republican Senator John McCain raises a different concern. He was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict and he points out that that war started with U.S. troops acting as advisers.

“The draw down will take place,” said John McCain. “We will leave, I’ve read, as many as 50,000 - quote - ‘advisers.’ But let’s also be realistic. Advisers in any conflict are in harm’s way.”

The Pentagon did an about turn and will now allow the media and others to photograph the caskets of U.S. troops. This leaves the door wide open for insensitive media and special interest groups who may not care about the feelings of families. The obama Adminstration says the family must first give permission before such pictures are taken, but that is no firewall against crazies.

We have seen people exploit the families and names of those who have given the ultimate price. Crazies in the San Francisco Bay Area have erected white crosses with soldiers’ names on them - even when the parents or families of these brave veterans have asked the groups to stop such offensive displays. Anti-war groups have printed the names of the war dead to make their points - again, flouting the pain of Gold Star families.

Like his mistakes on closing Gitmo and spending trillions of dollars on pork projects that indebt future generations, Obama is dead wrong on this issue. He has shown a cold shoulder to thousands of Gold Star families whose pain can never be healed.

Inhofe Responds to Holders Remarks on Gitmo

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a Senior Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement in response to remarks made by Attorney General Eric Holder following his recent visit to GITMO on Monday. The remarks today, as reported by the Associated Press, are the first since Holder’s return.

“I am not at all surprised to hear the Attorney General return with a glowing report about conditions at Gitmo,” Senator Inhofe said. “Just as I have found in my visits to Gitmo, and as apparently will be stated in an upcoming Pentagon report, we know Gitmo meets the highest international standards and is a fundamental part of protecting the lives of Americans from terrorism.

“I am also pleased to hear that the Attorney General understands closing Gitmo will take time and will not be an easy process. I believe as more time goes by, there is a chance Administration will grow to realize that we need Gitmo and must keep it open. More time will allow facts to replace political rhetoric. 

“The fact remains we need Gitmo because it is the only complex in the world that can safely and humanely hold these individuals who pose such a grave security risk to our nation.  It is a secure location away from population centers that protects communities from both potential escapes as well as attacks, provides multiple levels of confinement opportunities based on the compliance of the detainee, and provides medical care not available to a majority of the population of the world. 

Senator Inhofe introduced legislation (S.370) to prevent the detainees at Guantanamo from being relocated anywhere on American soil. Earlier this month, Senator Inhofe led a Congressional Delegation to Guantanamo Bay to see firsthand the state of the prison operations and get the facts out about its critical role in keeping U.S. national security.
