Most Americans Think War in Iraq is Going Well

Hard is not hopeless.” - Gen. David Petraeus, 2007

A majority of Americans believe the Iraq war is going well or very well. This is a 14 percent increase since June, and the highest rating on this question in more than four years.

I just want to thank each American patriot for standing with our troops when some folks, uh-hum, bashed our country’s brave warriors.

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press has a new survey out. It was conducted in association with the Council on Foreign Relations. Though the headline on the poll is Declining Public Support for Global Engagement, it contains sections on energy and Iraq that provide some interesting information that isn’t breaking through in the current news environment.

Section 2, Views of Iraq and Afghanistan contains poll data that, a few months ago, would have been given considerable coverage. For example:

58 percent of respondents now say the war in Iraq is going well or very well
. This is a 14 percent increase since June, and the highest rating on this question in more than four years.
Positive perceptions of the war increased since June by 15 percent among women, and by 17 percent among independents.
58 percent also now say that the U.S. will definitely or probably succeed in Iraq.  A year ago, 47 percent predicted failure.

Section 3, Opinions About Energy Policy, also has interesting data. For example:
A solid majority (55 percent) now support drilling in ANWR. That’s an increase of 13 percent—just since February—including 52 percent of independents. As the report puts it, “Support for ANWR drilling has increased across demographic groups.”
Respondents overwhelming support an “all of the above” approach to energy independence, with more than two thirds of respondents supporting everything from drilling in coastal waters to greater fuel efficiency, development of renewable fuels and increased fuel efficiency.
Support for offshore exploration “garners the same level of support in coastal states as it does elsewhere.”
Respondents were evenly split on the nation’s overall energy priorities: “45% say that expanding exploration, mining, and drilling, and the construction of new power plants should be the more important priority, while 47% say the priority should be on more energy conservation and regulation on energy use and prices.” That’s a sharp change from February, when 35 percent favored increased exploration, etc., and 55 percent conservation and regulation as the priority.

Michael Yon’s Stunning Photos from Iraq and Afghanistan

Our friend Michael Yon is a great photojournalist and reporter.  I don’t give that compliment lightly. But if you don’t read his stuff and support his mission, you don’t care much about the truth in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He has announced a photo exhibit:

Moment of Truth in Iraq Photography Exhibit

I am very happy to announce the opening of my first photography exhibit.  During my travels I have taken thousands of photos, only a small portion of which have been published.  Some of these images will be on public view for the first time when Picture Perfect Frame Shop in Lakeland, Florida, hosts the Moment of Truth in Iraq Photo Exhibit.  From September 25 to November 8, the gallery will feature forty images which have been specially prepared for this event.  All images will be available for purchase, along with copies of my books Moment of Truth in Iraq and Danger Close. The proceeds will help fund my work in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Although I will be in Afghanistan, I cordially welcome everybody who can make it.  If you’re in the Central Florida area, please come see the exhibit.  It will really mean a lot to me.
Michael

Top Obama Campaign Member Met With Ahmadinejad in New York

The incestuous relationship between Barack Obama and anti-war agitators is frightening. It’s even more scary when you get the lowdown on the goings-on between the radical special interests and terrorists leaders, such as Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Our Freeper friend, Kristinn Taylor, has the story here.:

A founding member of the campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois met in New York City tonight with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Jodie Evans, who co-hosted Obama’s first major fundraiser in Hollywood in February 2007 just after Obama announced his candidacy and is a top fundraiser and donor to Obama’s campaign, led a delegation of leftist anti-American groups that held a private meeting near the United Nations. The stated purpose of the meeting was to “serve as an opening for diplomatic resolution” to prevent war between Iran and the United States.

The government of Iran is listed as a state sponsor of terrorism by the State Department and is strongly believed to be developing nuclear weapons.

Obama has stated that he would be willing to meet with Ahmadinejad and other enemies of the United States without conditions. Evans met with Obama in Beverly Hills last week at an exclusive $28,500 per person fundraiser. As a bundler for Obama, Evans is granted regular briefings with top Obama staff members and meeting with Obama and his vice presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.

Obama has come under heavy criticism from military families and troops support organizations over his alliance with Evans.

Evans is co-founder of the pro-terrorist group Code Pink and works with state sponsors of terrorism to undermine America in the war on terror. She also has publicly announced her support for the terrorists in Iraq, her sympathy for Osama bin Laden and her “love” of Hugo Chavez.

Given Evans’ closeness to regular contacts with Obama and his campaign, it is fair to ask if she is acting as an intermediary for Obama.

Obama recently put his seal of approval on Evans’ attempt to storm the stage during the acceptance speech of Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska when he welcomed her to his two Hollywood fundraisers last week, the exclusive $28,500 per person event and the $2500 per person event Barbra Streisand sang at the same evening.

Others attending the meeting with Ahmadinejad included anti-American activists who support the terrorists in Iraq and work anti-American governments: Medea Benjamin, Brian Becker, Leslie Cagan, Larry Holmes and Ramsey Clark.

The press release announcing the meeting can be found here.

Update: Jodie Evans issued the following statement tonight on her meeting with Ahmadinejad.

“It’s rare for a head of state to take time during an official U.N. visit to meet with the peace community, especially in a situation where the host government —represented by the Bush administration — is so hostile,” said Jodie Evans, co-founder of CODEPINK. “The fact that the meeting took place and was so positive is, in itself, a major step forward.”

Iraq War Resister Still Safe in Canada

Now here’s a story that can sour the stomach. A Canadian judge has delayed a soldier’s return to the United States, where he would likely face charges of desertion.

Jeremy Hinzman was one of the first soldiers to flee to Canada to avoid going to war in Iraq. But he wasn’t the last. A report from AFP estimates that 200 resisters have deserted and none have secured refugee status from Canada.

These deserters need to come home and face the music. One guy has already done that and was sentenced to 15 months in prison. Seems more than reasonable. After all, they did swear to serve in the Army, which means they could end up in a war zone. What part of Army didn’t they understand???

Here’s the story:

OTTAWA (AFP) — Canada’s federal court on Monday granted US war resister Jeremy Hinzman a last minute stay of deportation to the United States, a spokesman for the court told AFP.
Judge Richard Mosley delayed Hinzman’s return to the United States, where he would likely face a court martial for fleeing to Canada to avoid deployment to Iraq, while it considers whether to hear his appeal of a deportation order.
Hinzman is challenging a pre-removal risk assessment that found he would not face undue or harsh punishment if returned to the United States, and is also asking to stay in Canada on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
Hinzman, who was among the first US soldiers to flee to Canada at the height of the Iraq war, was to be sent home on Tuesday.
The father of two had deployed to Afghanistan in a non-combat role after asking the US Army for conscientious objector status.
But when he learned his unit would later be deployed to Iraq, he fled with his family to Canada, which is home to an estimated recent 200 US war resisters, none of whom have yet to secure refugee status.
More than a dozen US war resisters are fighting uphill legal battles to stay in this country, after the first of them was sent home and sentenced in August to 15 months in prison for desertion.

Bin Laden Wants to Influence Presidential Decision?

Osama bin Laden, the maniacal Islamist and al Qaeda leader, is planning attacks to try to influence America’s presidential elections, according to a story in the New York Sun.

“Call it Osama bin Laden’s “October surprise.” In late August, during the weekend between the Democratic and Republican conventions, America’s military and intelligence agencies intercepted a series of messages from Al Qaeda’s leadership to intermediate members of the organization asking local cells to be prepared for imminent instructions.
An official familiar with the new intelligence said the message was picked up in multiple settings, from couriers to encrypted electronic communications to other means. “These are generic orders,” the source said — a distinction from the more specific intelligence about the location, time, and method of an attack. “It was, ‘Be on notice. We may call upon you soon.’ It was sent out on many channels.”
Also, Yemen’s national English-language newspaper is reporting that a spokesman for Yemen’s Islamic Jihad, the Qaeda affiliate that claimed credit for last week’s American embassy bombing in Sa’naa, is now publicly threatening to attack foreigners and high government officials if American and British diplomats do not leave the country.
Mr. bin Laden has sought to influence democratic elections in the past. On March 11, 2004, Al Qaeda carried out a series of bombings on Madrid commuter trains. Three days later, the opposition and anti-Iraq war Socialist Workers Party was voted into power.
In the week before the 2004 American presidential election, Mr. bin Laden recorded a video message to the American people promising repercussions if President Bush were re-elected. In later messages, Al Qaeda’s leader claimed credit for helping elect Mr. Bush in 2004. Last year in Pakistan, Qaeda assassins claimed the life of Benazir Bhutto, a former prime minister who returned to her native country in a bid for re-election.
“There is an expectation that Al Qaeda will try to influence the November elections by attempting attacks globally,” a former Bush and Clinton White House counterterrorism official, Roger Cressey, said yesterday.
Mr. Cressey said Al Qaeda lacks the capability to pull off an attack in the continental United States, however. “It would likely be a higher Al Qaeda tempo of attacks against U.S. and allied targets abroad,” he said.
